Monumental Surface
Monumental Surface is a research project that delves into traditional maritime and fishing industry techniques and materials. Studio Nina van Bart reimagines these conventional methods to create unconventional designs. This project exemplifies the use of twinned ropes, connected through a coiling technique, to form unique rope landscapes inspired by monumental architecture.Commissioned by Dutch Invertuals, Monumental Surface was showcased in their group exhibition, "Body Language," at the Salone del Mobile in Milan 2015 and Galerie Joseph during DDays in Paris 2015.
Alternative Applications of Conventional Techniques
Studio Nina van Bart explores all aspects of surface materials in architecture and assists manufacturers and material brands in rethinking fabrication processes and applications.Monumental Surface was created after research into knotting and coiling techniques used in the fishing and maritime industries. Studio Nina van Bart repurposed the traditional knotting system, giving it a contemporary appearance and alternative function. The ropes were knotted in varying volumes and depths, resulting in a rich pattern. The ends of the ropes were finished with a palm and needle technique and then dipped in rubber to prevent fraying.Because maritime ropes can withstand extreme weather conditions, Monumental Surface can be installed both indoors and outdoors. Monumental Surface can be customised in terms of size, colour, and shape to suit the preferences and intended use of clients.
“I like to reimagine traditional craftsmanship, bridging the gap between historical techniques and contemporary innovation. This fusion creates a dynamic dialogue between the past and the future, highlighting both proven value and new possibilities.”
